I'm Dave, I made The Blockheads, and today I am announcing that I have been working on Blockheads 2!
Over the years I have had so much incredible feedback from players. Many messages have brought tears to my eyes. Just a few weeks a go I got an email from someone who had learned to play Gymnopédie No. 1 and thanked Blockheads for their love of classical music. I've had at least a dozen emails exactly like that. I have heard from people who met in The Blockheads and later married. People who learned how to code HTML to change their multiplayer welcome screens which led to jobs as web designers. And I've had many messages from people who got through terrible times by escaping to their Blockheads worlds.
The Blockheads touched so many people's lives, and in ways I never intended or expected. It's had a profound impact on people, and that's had a profound impact on me.
The sad thing is, it's only a matter of time before the current version of The Blockheads won't function anymore. It's already gone from Android, and Apple will do something to break backwards compatibility soon.
Around a year ago, I started building a new engine that I called Katipo. It wasn't for Blockheads 2, it was a side project, a general purpose “app engine” for my own use, and to take a bit of a break from my 11 year behemoth Sapiens. But then as I went on working on it, I started to keep The Blockheads in mind more and more “just in case”. And then a few weeks ago, everything clicked into place. The engine was ready, and I started porting Blockheads.
To start with, it will be more of a remaster. A reconstruction of the original with bug fixes and a bunch of improvements. But then more will be added on top of this new foundation. It is a rebuild from scratch, on a completely new foundation, in a new language, for new platforms, with new content. It is Blockheads 2.
Here are some details for now, more to come later!
- The price will be about $5 up-front. No IAPs, no ads, no tracking, no slimy stuff
- Blockheads 2 uses a custom cross platform engine built from scratch by the original developer
- Available in as many places as possible in as many ways as possible. Includes iOS, Android, Linux, macOS, Windows, Steam, itch.io
- Self-hosted fully encrypted cross platform multiplayer over katipo
- Blockheads 2 will be 100% human made. I am anti-AI. I don't and won't intentionally use AI ever for anything.
